Ilmapiiri (Atmosphere) 25.6-22.8.2025, Helsinki Biennial outreach project, Vallisaari
Ilmapiiri (Atmosphere) is a dance performance by choreographer and performance artist Kati Raatikainen, exploring togetherness, breath, and our connection to the environment. Every time it is created together with its participants, making each performance unique and shaped by those involved. Participants receive short instructions through headphones and respond to them in their own way. The piece is experienced both individually and as part of a group, following its terms. The performance includes physical contact, such as holding hands, but participation in touch is not required.
Air is a timely element, substance, concept, political challenge, and both a social and personal concern. It is a mixture of gases that make up the Earth's atmosphere. Through the act of breathing, we become part of the atmosphere and the circulation of gases between living beings; the boundary between the inside and outside becomes porous. From the perspective of gas exchange, there is no separation between you and me—or between a houseplant and myself.
“In Ilmapiiri, we look at and feel the wonderful Vallisaari island, its plants, and its air. Alongside wonder, we move and share time with others, celebrating the circle formation—one of the oldest and most universal forms of human gathering across time and place. In this performance, you may feel that you belong,” says Kati Raatikainen.

“See Me Beautiful” Project
I will continue to be part of the Community Dances association's project for seniors during 2025–2026. I lead weekly sessions on Tuesdays in Pohjois-Haaga and Thursdays in Tapulikaupunki. The classes combine yoga, free movement, and other creative methods.
